Our Place in Shortlees – three years on!

The BIG Lottery funded Our Place initiative in Shortlees in Kilmarnock is proving very successful after the first 3 years.  Major projects already funded by the BIG Lottery include – a new entrance feature to Shortlees; the Community and School Together (CAST) project; the Our Wee Place community hub; Raise Your Voice Shortlees by Centrestage; and five years funding for the SKY Project (Stuff for Kids and Youth).  Projects in the pipeline include a brand new play area on Burn Park; a Community Garden project; and most exciting of all – a new organisation to take things forward into the future – the Shortlees Community Development Trust.

Our Wee Place community hub

The community of Shortlees was selected as one of seven communities to benefit from the BIG Lottery “Our Place” Initiative, providing support and funding over 5 years to empower local people and organisations to bring about positive and lasting change in their neighbourhood.   Although we have already secured nearly £700,000 for Shortlees, Our Place has been about a lot more than projects – it is about people coming together, building relationships, encouraging and supporting each other, and making things happen.

The second edition of the Shortlees Newsletter – produced by pupils at Shortlees Primary School in June – gives a flavour of what’s going on in the community.  Click the link below to read it.
